Fertility Talk

Aug. 22nd, 2009 | 01:04 pm
mood: optimistic optimistic

Hubby and I have started the process of getting pregnant. I was six weeks late recently, so thought I might be pregnant. But, I was testing negative on the home pregnancy tests. My cycle has always been pretty regular, maybe one week off occasionally. So I thought, am I pregnant? Have I stopped ovulating?

I found a good doctor based on an internet list of "size friendly ob/gyn's", and he wasn't too far away, and my insurance seems to cover him. He did some tests. I am not pregnant, which is not a surprise, as the doctor thought I was not. I have an elevated thyroid, so I'm going back to see the doctor next week so that we can prescribe meds for that. My FSH was normal, so that means I'm not menopausal, I should still be making eggs. FSH is Follicle Stimulating Hormone, and an elevated level can mean that a woman is nearing menopause.

I also started Metformin last night, which is supposed to help reset my cycle. I am taking 250 mg twice a day, while my body gets used to it. It can wreak havoc on your stomach. On monday, if all is well, I will go up to 500 mg twice a day. Three days after my period starts, I begin Clomid and Prevara.

I started going to the gym with hubby last night to make myself stronger, so hopefully I am going down the right paths. I am also focusing on non-junky foods, good percentage of raw, lots of fruits, veggies, whole grains. Cutting down my caffeine, which is a big challenge for me.

I have a headache today and am congested, wonder if it's my body getting used to the Metformin.

Gomez would like everyone to know that he looks handsome in a variety of outfits.  And he and daddy like to play bitey-hands.

Oh Bombay Bazaar, How I Love You

Jul. 13th, 2009 | 09:46 pm
mood: full full

This week is tried and true cooking week.  I've tried a bunch of different recipes lately, and I've suffered a few horrifying failures.  So we decided that this week I would only make dinners that we have made and enjoyed before.

Luckily I just picked up some more of my favorite dal beans.  After having a delightful burrito at La Cumbre on Valencia (in SF), we went to Bombay Bazaar for the most amazing little beans.  I use them in the "Rauncy Red Lentil" soup from the La Dolce Vegan cookbook.  I have made the soup before with yellow split peas, and it's good, but not spectacular.   Here are pictures of the beans (with Gomez the dog for scale!) and the soup.  If you're in the city, or if you have an Indian grocery in your city, I recommend them.  They were $3.99 for 2 pounds, which is lots of bowls of tasty soup.

Truly, the Creatures Were in the Audience

Jul. 11th, 2009 | 04:32 pm
mood: disappointed disappointed

The hubby and I went to see "Creature from the Black Lagoon" at the Paramount Theater in Oakland last night.  We love this movie, and we were excited to see it on a big screen.  And, it was nice to see it on a big screen.  But it would have been a hell of a lot nicer if the audience had not been full of children.  Adult children.  Children who laughed at something in every scene.  Yeah, it's a real hoot of a movie, what with man as invasive species destroying the environment of the Amazon.  (Which I'm pretty sure is how Ebola happened, which is an interesting parallel.)

The Paramount Theater is a gorgeous landmark of a place.  An Art Deco theater constructed in 1931, its history is here if you're interested http://www.paramounttheatre.com/history.html.  So additionally, it would have been great if people hadn't been knocking beer bottles all over the floor.

I know, I know, I sound like a cranky old lady.  I am.  But the Creature is such a gorgeously sad movie, and I couldn't believe that people found it so funny.  Did they really find it funny, or were they just drunk?  Hubby has a much better post about the experience here:  http://animalogic.livejournal.com/27873.html.

Back to The Land of the Posting

mood: discontent discontent

I haven't posted in a long time.  I cannot access LiveJournal at work, but I miss blogging and being in touch with a few people that I only know online.

What have I been up to?  Working on getting healthy, breaking up with the diet industry, being in endless love with my hubby, working, going to graduate school, TTC, cooking awesome veggie dinners, hating South San Francisco in general, making a tiny perzine.

Anarchist Book Fair

Mar. 23rd, 2008 | 05:12 pm
mood: creative

Mr. Monster and I went to the Anarchist Book Fair in SF today.  It's always a good time, and always an opportunity to talk to lots of friendly people.  It was a beautiful day in the city today to boot.  We saw a talk and slide show given by NYC artist Fly, which I really enjoyed.  We also talked to V Vale, of Research Books fame.  He's a really nice guy, and I wish we'd had money to buy some of his stuff.  I gave him the latest issue of our magazine, I hope he enjoys it.

There were lots of great dogs there too.  I love to pet all dogs, they're so much better than many people.  I started a project last year called Rest Stop Dogs, where I was just going to take pictures of all the dogs I see, and make a collage or something interesting.  I need to finish that.

I'm reading "No Plot, No Problem" right now, which is making me really excited for NaNoWriMo in November.  i've never written a novel, but I will this year, along with many other novelists hurling themselves through the month of November towards 50,000 words.

We also ran into my friend Colin, who worked at New College with me the first time around.  I also enjoy talking to him.
